Prayer is the soul's sincere desire, unuttered or expressed.  Prayer is the burden of a sigh, the falling of a tear, the upward glancing of an eye when none but God is near.  Prayer is the expression of the soul that yearns for God through the Word, which is how we as humans give voice to the storminess of our souls and spirits.  In prayer, we take a leap of faith and respond upward and beyond our circumstances hoping that in heaven our merciful God will ignore our human inconsistencies and faults and listen to our humble and sincere cries.
